"I Don't Want To Set The World On Fire"

Is it me, or has the world gone apocalypse mad?
Or post-apocalypse I suppose. About a year ago my boyfriend got a video game: Fallout 3.
It's essentially what would've happened if America had been nuked. Weird radioactive mutants, people going batshit crazy killing each other and looting things. It's a scary thought.
Then, I saw Book of Eli (which by the way is an amazing film) and saw a few of the same elements. Somethings happened to the world, and everyones either a bloodthirsty maniac or just trying to get by. And food and water are pretty hard to come by, although some people have opted for cannibalism. There's a point where Eli (played by Denzel Washington) says "Back then people threw away what people would kill each other for now" or at least something to that effect. Kind of hard hitting. And I find myself looking at people on buses wondering if they'll murder me and take my Evian when the world ends. The Road, which I haven't seen yet, also looks at post-apocalypse living.
Seeing the pattern yet?
No?
Also coming up is "Metro 2033" a russian book, but I'm waiting for the release of the translation (February if you're interested) which is now being made into a video-game, and then a film. That too, features a look at post apocalypse living in the subways of Russia.
So what exactly has happened to get us all doom, gloom and apocalyptic? I don't know either. Maybe it's because of the eco-warriors really have us convinced that we're killing the planet. Or it could be that old crock that the world is gonna end in 2012. The Mayan calendar (which is where the scary 2012 stuff started) signifies a new beginning in 2012 not the end of everything!!!
Either way, all I know is when the world ends, I'll share my water with you if you promise you won't kill and eat me.
